How to define your curls, eliminate dry ends, prevent frizz, and more.

Curly hair thrives when you follow a regular hair care routine. However, it can take a little trial and error to figure it out the best way to shampoo, condition and style curls. Want a shortcut? The following steps are a tried-and-true method mastered by curly hair pros. So go on—give your curly hair some love!

Cleanse Hair with Care

Certain curl types may get frizzy from regular shampooing, so you may decide to co-wash instead—a.k.a. swap out your shampoo completely and just use conditioner. Believe it or not, conditioner also provides mild cleansing. While this method can help protect coarse, kinky and coily hair from moisture loss, co-washing can leave other types of curls flat, lifeless and over-conditioned. So if you have waves or soft, fine or springy curls, opt for a clarifying shampoo that doesn’t strip away natural oils.

Condition and Detangle Hair

After rinsing out your shampoo (start here if you co-wash!), it’s time to hydrate your curls. Slather on a rich formula like Conditioner, which softens curls with a blend of macadamia nut, jojoba and coconut oils. Now take a few minutes to detangle your curls with your fingers or a wide-toothed comb as they soak in the moisture. Do your curls feel crispy and dry? Transform your regular conditioner into a deep moisturizing hair mask by combining it with a hair oil formula. Look for hair oil formulas with hydrating ingredients like avocado oil and almond oil. Keep the hair treatment on for 15 minutes before rinsing.

Get Your Curls to Clump

Once your curls are clean and conditioned, add curl cream or gel to protect their shape and keep curls defined.

The Best Way to Dry Curly Hair

Before you pick up a hair dryer, blot your hair with an old T-shirt (or use the plopping method) to remove excess water. This will cut down on both hair frizz and heat damage. Set your dryer to the medium heat and low air settings, and use a diffuser attachment to dry your curls upside down until they are mostly dry. Allow them to air-dry the rest of the way. Curly hair has never been more gorgeous—or easier to get.
